Respect for the environment explained to children

junk disposal by children

Adopting a sustainable lifestyle in a home is very important, because children represent the generations who will have the responsibility to produce, work and consume in the future.

It is therefore essential that children grow up understanding the importance of respecting the environment and are made aware of ecological values. Whether you are parents or childcare, your help will be essential for them to adopt a sustainable lifestyle when they grow up.

But how can we explain good eco-friendly actions to children? Through small actions and fun activities. Here are seven you can put into practice today!

Seven activities that teach children to respect the environment

Use the bike as much as possible

If possible, avoid using the car. Especially in spring and summer, when warm weather invites you to spend more time outdoors, take the opportunity to breathe fresh air and get some exercise.

Do some gardening tasks

Thanks to this fun activity, children will have the opportunity to have a green thumb. Simply buying a plant and caring for it is enough, as it will educate children to protect and care for nature.

Do not consume what is not necessary

How many times have you left the water running while you brushed your teeth or left the light on when you didn’t need it? So show your children these simple actions of turning off lights and taps when they are not using them. Also explain to them the reasons for these actions, that is to say, explain that overconsumption of light and water is harmful to the environment, and excess waste creation creates more pollution.

Sort waste

You probably already do it because it is provided for by each municipality, but since you are there to explain it to your children, involve them in the daily sorting activity. You can use a visual aid like the one below and explain the purpose of each subject. With a visual aid, it will be more automatic for children to recycle, especially when they have to do it themselves or with other people.

Give objects a second life or donate them

According to waste management specialists at Marietta Dumpster Guys, you can reuse or donate what you don’t recycle. Reusing an object, or its components, to give life to another will teach children not to waste anything. A classic example is creative recycling, which allows you to make pretty DIY projects with materials such as cardboard or plastic bottles.

On the other hand, in the case of objects in good condition, but which you no longer use, you can choose to give them away, perhaps to people who need them. You can sort clothes and toys that no longer suit you and donate them to associations. An action like this also teaches children the concept of sharing.

Reduce your meat consumption

Moderate meat consumption contributes to less pollution. The meat industry contributes more to greenhouse gas emissions than the transport industry. At home, with your children, try to adopt a more sustainable diet. Even a change in small doses will have a positive impact on the environment.

Use less plastic

Much of the plastic we throw away ends up in the oceans. In addition to harming marine species, this harms the environment and our own health. Here too, you just need to change a few habits to remove plastic from your routine.

For example, use reusable bags when shopping or shopping with your children, eat cereals in bulk, use glass bottles, etc.

So, as parents or nanny, remember to set a good example for your children, because they imitate your behavior very easily. Once they learn to be more environmentally friendly inside their home, it will be easier for them to adopt this attitude outside.
